"Living Life in Gratitude," by Brother David Steindl-Rast, an excerpt from the August, 2007 issue of UNITY DAILY WORD...THE PRACTICE OF GRATITUDE!
... I believe that everyone who discovers gratefulness as a spiritual practice will also experience a conversion. People have told me that when they wake up to the belief that everything is a gift from God, their lives are turned around. Before that conversion, they may have been complaining about life most of the time. Being grateful, they no longer take even the simple things in life for granted. They find that there is a gift of opportunity within even the most unappealing gift wrapping. Most of the time it is an opportunity they will enjoy. Sometimes, however, it's an opportunity to grow that may involve some growing pains.
I find that a helpful exercise in gratefulness is to create my own reminders of what I am grateful for. During a lecture tour in Africa, I discovered that drinkable water was an incredible gift. When I came back home, I put a sticker on my faucet to remind me that every time I turned on the faucet, I received the gift of water. Traditionally, a prayer before or after meals is a reminder to be grateful for the good and the fellowship of those with whom we share a meal. A prayer in the morning and reading "Daily Word" are reminders that the whole day is a gift.
One of the reminders I have used for decades is, in the evening, to write down one thing that I am especially grateful for on that day. I may repeat things, but to the extent that I can remember, there is something new every day.
We have to be careful, however, not to turn gratefulness into glibly counting our blessings. More than that, gratefulness is a deep realization that continues to grow. We start by counting our blessings with the purpose of realizing that every moment is a gift from God. Every time we breathe in, we receive God's blessing; every time we breathe out, we give back to God in praise and thanskgiving. Our gratefulness is shared with the people we meet through a smile, through a hand shake, through a kind word.
The practice of gratefulness is a spiritual practice that transforms a person who is given to moping and complaining to a person who is radiant with joy.
A special bonus of gratefulness as a spiritual path is that it gives us immediate results. When we make up our mind that for the rest of this day we will be a little more alert to everything being a gift, by the end of the day, we will be more joyful. Nothing that we take for granted gives us joy. Whatever we are grateful for makes us happy. True joy is the happiness that doesn't depend on what happens to us; it is what naturally happens when we respond gratefully to life..."

Humdulillah: The Attitude of Gratitude in the Islamic Culture by Ranbir Singh uses the simple story of an angry man lost in the desert as a thoughtful lesson of how we ourselves can change our hearts and attitudes and the changes in our lives that happen as a result of this change in attitude. www.humdulillah.com
The simplicity of being grateful and the powerful effect it has on our lives is unequaled by any other practice of its kind. There is magic in gratitude. It raises our consciousness, recharges our energy, and enhances our self-worth.
Too often we look outside of ourselves for experiences of pleasure and joy. By creating an attitude of gratitude in our inner selves, we see the world through new eyes. Everything becomes an expression of love as gratitude circles in and out of our hearts.
Feel gratitude for all that is. Let it radiate outward and emit its subtle vibration that turns into a vital energy.
Sarah Ban Breathnach writes in her book Simple Abundance on January 14 The Gratitude Journal:
this is the first tool that could change the quality of your life beyond belief: its what I call a daily gratitude journal. I have a beautiful blank book and each night before I go to bed, I write down five things that I can be grateful about that day
you simply will not be the same person two months from now after consciously giving thanks each day for the abundance that exists in your life. And you will have set in motion an ancient spiritual law; the more you have and are grateful for, the more will be given to you.
Quoted with permission from the author. Gratitude Works is patterned after Sarah Ban Breathnachs suggestion of writing five gratitudes a day.
Forgive for Good by Dr. Fred Luskin, Dr. Luskin states in Chapter 7: "The Science of Forgiveness" on pages 112 and 113:
"... Many of us are renting more space to rehashing our grievances than focusing on gratitude, love, or appreciation of nature. My central message here is when you bring more positive experiences into your life; your hurts will diminish in importance. In fact, this is the first step to taking responsibility for how you feel and beginning to forgive. If I rent out more and more space in my mind to appreciating my children or the loveliness of a rainy day, there is as a result less space and time for dwelling on the hurts..."
"... There is never a moment we cannot give thanks for the gifts of our life. Each breath we take is a precious gift..."
(Published by HarperCollins; copyright 2002. Quoted with permission from the author)
In the book l0 Essentials of Highly Healthy People by Walt Larimore, M.D. (Host of Radio and TV's Focus on Your Family's Health) with Traci Mullins, it is written under "The Gratitude Antidote," pages. l25, 126, 127, l28:
"... One good way to develop an attitude of gratitude is to begin a gratitude list or a gratitude journal--a practice endorsed by Oprah Winfrey and popularized by Sarah Ban Breathnach's best seller Simple Abundance. In fact, this concept is so well accepted that a 1998 Gallup poll showed that more than 90 percent of Americans believe that expressing gratitude makes them happy.
I gave one of my patients who had a particularly bad attitude (and the chronic depression that often goes with it) the assignment of keeping a daily gratitude journal for two weeks. On her next visit, she said, 'I can't believe how much better it makes me feel and function. I still have bad moods and disappointments--but they seem to be getting better by the day. On days when I keep a list of all the little things that give me a lift, it's amazing how the good feelings just grow. On days when I forget- well, my bad attitude gets the best of me!'
Behavioral psychologists have taken note of the ageless principle that an attitude of gratitude will increase feelings of optimism and well-being. Psychology professors Michael McCullough, Ph.D., and Bob Emmons, Ph.D., have performed several studies on the perspective and dimensions of gratitude. Specifically, they've examined whether the positive attitudes that come from giving thanks can ease the emotional burdens and stress of women with breast cancer and people with neuromuscular disorders. It should be no surprise that the early results are positive--so much so that McCullough hosted the first-ever conference on gratitude's positive health effects.
... Researchers believe that an active cultivation of gratitude results in positive attitudes and well-being because of the principles of cognitive therapy (a form of psychotherapy that helps people replace negative explanations of events with more positive ones). When you find yourself brooding over an unpleasant experience, for instance, you can consciously choose to find a reason to be grateful. By doing so, you perform your own cognitive therapy.
... Due to the publicity generated by Oprah and others in the media, the public isn't waiting for scientists to explain why gratitude works. People are simply beginning en masse to keep gratitude lists. Why? A simple five-minute daily gratitude ritual makes believers out of many. It's like taking an emotional aspirin on emotionally painful days. I've seen a growing understanding among professionals and laypeople that it's not life events that make a person happy or unhappy; it's how a person copes with those events that makes the difference. Or, as my granddad used to say, 'Walt, if you're not content with what you have, you'll never be content with what you want!'
Keeping a gratitude journal is something most people have to work at over time. Researchers observe that it's not a natural tendency for most people, but that with time it can become automatic. Yet isn't that true for all of the essentials of highly healthy people? They are not automatic. They take effort. You need to determine whether your health--and that of your loved ones--is worth the effort.
... Try this experiment: Start taking an 'emotional aspirin' every day for a week. Keep a small journal at your bedside. Each night before going to sleep, record five things for which you are grateful. Then, for a minute or two, reflect on each item you recorded and thank God for the gifts you've been given. See what happens to your feelings over the course of just a few days..."

Diane Goldner states in her article Heart Matters (2001 May/June, New Age Magazine, p. 79):
"OPENING THE HEART ... HONORING WITH APPRECIATION AND GRATITUDE. If you are having problems with someone, spend five minutes a day appreciating and being thankful for his or her good qualities. You can do this during meditation, or even while driving to work. You can also silently appreciate and express thanks for a person's difficult qualities or the conflict you are experiencing. As you give thanks, you may become aware of what you are learning from the experience or relationship."

24 Brand New Hours Words and Music by Todd Lowry Copyright 2000 by Todd Lowry.
I wake up every morning And gratefully I greet the day. Twenty four brand new hours before me, Twenty four hours to pray. I'll try to live fully each moment And bless each person I meet And never take time for granted because Each new day is a rare treat.
Twenty four brand new hours, I thank God for all of life's flowers. And I'm grateful for each day I'm here on the earth With twenty four brand new hours.
I thank God for the small things, A sunset or a cloud on a hill, A favorite book or an old photograph, A cat curled up on the windowsill. And I vow to enjoy each path I take Knowing God will brighten my day. And a flower opens with each step I make Wishing me on my way.
Twenty four brand new hours, I thank God for his healing powers. And I'm grateful for each day I'm here on the earth With twenty four brand new hours.
Sixty minutes an hour, Sixty seconds a minute, I know higher powers Will guide me and in it Those twenty four hours a day Lead the way.
And I do my work each day Knowing God's light shines on me. Knowing that flowers will blossom And beauty will emerge spontaneously. Knowing peace is in every step I take And God will brighten my day. And a flower blossoms with each step I make And wishes me on my way.
Twenty four brand new hours, I thank God for all of life's flowers. And I'm grateful for each day I'm here on the earth To make all my dreams come true, God, I want to thank you For twenty four brand new... Brand new hours.
